MENTORLISM

Book a Conversation

Start with a conversation.

The first conversation is free. It's 30 minutes to talk about where you are, what you're thinking about and what you want from mentoring – and, most importantly, to work out whether Mentorlism is right for you.

There's no obligation to continue.

The first step

Free 30-minute consultation

01Why we talk first

We'll talk about where you are, what you're thinking about and what you want to achieve – and work out whether Mentorlism is right for you.

The first conversation gives you the room to explain where you are, talk through what's on your mind and ask whatever you want to ask. It gives you a feel for how I work, and it gives both of us a chance to understand what would actually be useful.

There's no pitch and no pressure. You decide whether mentoring would help and whether Mentorlism feels right for you. If it isn't, that's a perfectly good outcome too.

02How it works

Bring what you're actually thinking about. Then we go further.

It usually starts with whatever's in front of you now. It rarely stops there.

  1. Free 30-minute consultation

We talk about where you are, the challenge or decision you're working through, and what you want to achieve.

  2. Work out if it's right for you

The first conversation gives you a feel for how I work and gives both of us a chance to understand what would be useful. There's no obligation to continue.

  3. Set the direction

If you decide to continue, we go beyond the immediate challenge. Where do you want to go? What are your career goals?

  4. Build the framework

We turn those goals into something practical: priorities, actions and a framework for making progress.

  5. Turn it into action

The framework isn't there to sit in a document. The mentoring conversations should help turn what you want to achieve into decisions and actions you can take in your career and leadership.

  6. Measure progress

Ongoing conversations give us space to review what's changing, what's working, what isn't and whether the framework needs to change with you.

03Where do you want to go?

From your first newsroom to leading one.

Wherever you are in your career, the question underneath it is the same: where do you want to go next?

You might be trying to get into journalism, finding your feet in your first newsroom, building your reputation, moving into editing, leading a team for the first time, or making decisions at executive level. The immediate challenge changes at every stage – and so does what you want next. Mentoring starts with what's in front of you now, then moves toward where you're heading and what needs to happen to get there.

04Fees & mentoring

How mentoring can work.

Your first 30-minute consultation is free.

If we decide Mentorlism is right for you, we'll talk about the structure that makes sense and the fee before you make any commitment.

I mentor journalists at every stage of their careers – from people entering the industry to editors, newsroom leaders and executives. I recognise that capacity to pay isn't the same at every stage, particularly for people funding mentoring themselves.

Career stage may change what you can pay.

The rate may be different. The conversation isn't.

There's no application, no form and nothing to prove about your circumstances. We simply talk it through during the free 30-minute consultation and agree on the fee before you commit to anything.

05Two ways to work

A single conversation, or an ongoing one.

How mentoring continues after the free consultation depends on what you're trying to achieve.

Individual mentoring

A conversation, when you need one

Focused on a particular challenge, decision, career question or situation where an experienced, independent perspective would be useful.

Ongoing mentoring

A series of conversations

Room to establish career goals, build the framework, turn it into action, measure progress and adjust as your circumstances change.

Mentoring can also be arranged directly with media organisations as part of professional development for journalists, editors and newsroom leaders.

You don't need to have everything worked out before you get in touch. Send me a few lines about where you are and what you're thinking about. We'll start there.
